The Government of Ghana has received a US$35 million dividend from Perseus Mining Ghana Limited.
According to the Ministry of Finance, the payment is equivalent to approximately GH¢391 million and was received on behalf of the state.
The payment demonstrates the potential value of Ghana’s ownership interests in companies operating within the country’s natural-resource sector.
Beyond taxes and royalties, dividends from state holdings can provide additional revenue to support national development and reduce pressure on public finances.
The development also raises important questions about how Ghana manages its equity interests in mining companies and how effectively the resulting revenue is invested.
Greater transparency regarding the use of mineral revenues will help citizens understand how the country’s natural resources contribute to education, healthcare, infrastructure and employment.
