The chiefs and people of Manya Jorpanya visited Shai Hills on Thursday, 24 September 2026, as activities marking this year’s Ngmayem Festival continued.
Led by the Chief of Manya Jorpanya and Senior Asafoatse of the Shai State, Nene Dr Tei-Djahene Korabo IV, the visit took the community back to the ancestral home of the Shai people. It is a significant part of the annual celebration, bringing generations together at a place closely tied to their shared history.
For younger participants, the trip offers an opportunity to hear the stories of their forebears from elders and to understand the community’s connection to the hills. It is also a time to honour those who came before them and reflect on the traditions that remain central to Shai identity.
Ngmayem, associated with millet, harvest and thanksgiving, is more than a festive gathering. In Manya Jorpanya, activities such as the visit to Shai Hills help preserve the history behind the celebration and pass it on to future generations.
Ahead of the visit, Nene Dr Korabo IV commissioned a 12-seater public toilet facility for the Manya Jorpanya community. The project adds to existing local infrastructure and addresses a practical need for residents.
The chief said the facility was expected to provide a safe and secure place for people to use a toilet. He described its commissioning as part of a broader infrastructure agenda intended to support Manya Jorpanya’s development and meet the contemporary needs of its people.
The day’s activities thus brought together two priorities for the community: preserving its ancestral heritage and improving everyday facilities for residents. The Ngmayem celebrations continue with further events in Manya Jorpanya.
