Minister for Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts Abla Dzifa Gomashie has called for deliberate efforts to teach Ghanaian youth and people of African descent about their history.
She said Ghana’s forts, castles and other heritage sites should not only be preserved as physical structures but should also present accurate and balanced accounts of the country’s past.
The minister made the remarks during discussions with a Danish delegation concerning a proposed pilot project to preserve and restore Osu Castle.
Her message is particularly important at a time when many young Africans receive much of their historical knowledge through foreign media and online platforms.
Heritage education can help young people understand their identity while also encouraging critical reflection on slavery, colonialism, independence and Ghana’s relationship with the wider world.
Museums, schools, traditional authorities, historians and media organisations must work together to make Ghanaian history accessible, engaging and relevant to contemporary life.
